Why Are My Plant Leaves Turning Yellow?
One of the most common questions gardeners ask is:
“Why are my plant’s leaves turning yellow?”
Yellow leaves do not always mean your plant is dying. In many cases, they are simply a signal that something needs attention.
The good news is that most causes are easy to identify and correct.
This article is adapted from the forthcoming book Terrace Gardening for Indian Homes by Dinesh Chandra Rawat.
1. Overwatering – The Most Common Cause
Surprisingly, most plants suffer from too much water rather than too little.
When soil remains constantly wet, roots cannot breathe properly. Damaged roots struggle to absorb nutrients, causing leaves to turn yellow.
Signs
- Yellow leaves throughout the plant
- Wet soil
- Soft stems
- Poor growth
Solution
- Allow the soil to dry slightly before watering again.
- Improve drainage.
- Never allow water to collect in trays beneath pots.
2. Underwatering
Plants also develop yellow leaves when they remain dry for extended periods.
Signs
- Dry soil
- Crispy leaf edges
- Wilting
- Slow growth
Solution
Water deeply until excess water drains from the bottom of the container.
3. Poor Drainage
Even correct watering cannot help if water has nowhere to escape.
Blocked drainage holes cause root damage.
Solution
- Ensure every pot has drainage holes.
- Use a well-drained growing medium.
- Repot if necessary.
4. Lack of Sunlight
Many flowering plants require several hours of sunlight each day.
Plants kept in dark corners often develop pale or yellow leaves.
Solution
Move the plant to a brighter location according to its sunlight requirement.
5. Nutrient Deficiency
Plants need balanced nutrition to produce healthy green leaves.
Deficiencies of nitrogen, iron or magnesium often cause yellowing.
Signs
- Pale leaves
- Slow growth
- Smaller new leaves
Solution
Apply a balanced organic fertilizer or plant nutrition programme suited to the plant species.
6. Natural Ageing
Sometimes yellow leaves are completely normal.
Older leaves gradually turn yellow before dropping as the plant produces fresh new growth.
If only one or two older leaves are affected, there is usually no cause for concern.
7. Root-Bound Plants
Plants kept in the same pot for many years may outgrow their containers.
Crowded roots struggle to absorb water and nutrients.
Solution
Repot into a slightly larger container using fresh growing medium.
8. Pest Attack
Sap-sucking insects such as aphids, mealybugs and scale insects weaken plants and may cause yellowing.
Inspect both the upper and lower surfaces of leaves regularly.
Early treatment prevents serious damage.
Green Mall Expert Tip
When gardeners notice yellow leaves, many immediately apply fertilizer.
This often makes the problem worse.
Our advice is simple:
Check the soil before adding anything.
If the soil is waterlogged, fertilizer cannot solve the problem. Correct watering and healthy roots should always come first.
Simple Yellow Leaf Diagnosis
Ask yourself these five questions:
✔ Is the soil too wet?
✔ Is the soil too dry?
✔ Does the plant receive enough sunlight?
✔ Has it been in the same pot for years?
✔ Have you checked for insects?
In most cases, these questions quickly identify the real cause.
When Should You Worry?
Seek expert advice if:
- Most leaves are turning yellow rapidly.
- New leaves are also yellow.
- Stems become soft.
- Roots smell rotten.
- Growth stops completely.
Early diagnosis often saves the plant.
